UnionHotel.jpgDowntown Meridian's Historic Buildings
On behalf of the Meridian Historic Preservation Commission, the Community Development-Planning Division and the Finance & Records-Information Systems Division in conjunction with web-site consultant James R. Peavy are pleased to announce the launch of Phase 1 for a new informational product available through the City of Meridian's web-site @ www.meridianms.org/downtownhistoricresources/index.html  . This product provides a photographic and narrative description of the buildings of the Meridian Downtown Historic Preservation District as these resources were catalogued on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 with new photos taken between 2006 and 2009. The site features search and scroll capability by map, by street and by address with a "you are here" locator for each building. Also provided is a link to the Lauderdale County property records database published through Delta Computer Systems, Inc. for those who might wish to avail themselves of more detailed and current information. It is anticipated that a second phase of this endeavor will be pursued over time. This will include researching and subsequent update of the site to flesh out informational categories such as; historic names, builder/architect, architectural style/period, and resource category. Also archival photos for some buildings going back as far as the late 1800's will be added along with resources either individually listed on the National Register, or demolished prior to the 2006 survey of resources. This project was funded through a Certified Local Government Grant awarded by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in the amount of $5,000 with the Meridian City Council providing the required 50% match. We encourage feedback from the public regarding the accuracy and usefulness of this product. Please email your response to planning@meridianms.org.  FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR  DON FARRAR AT 601-485-1914.
